My friend makes the best mulled wine. It simply smells like Christmas. There is no better aroma to greet you after a cold day skiing or any cold day for that matter. Mulled wine is also a good way to make the wine go further.
- 750ml full bodied red wine
- 300ml orange juice
- 500ml water
- a whole orange studded with cloves
- ½ tsp mixed spice
- 2 cinnamon quills
- 150g sugar
In a large saucepan combine the wine, water and orange juice. Add the studded orange, mixed spice and cinnamon quills and heat gently till simmering.
Add the sugar and adjust to your taste. Keep the mulled wine on the stove on a very low setting and serve piping hot.
Mary suggests making it an hour before your guests arrive so the house smells spicy and aromatic when people arrive. I suggest making it earlier so you can have more than your share!
The slow-cooker is brilliant for keeping mulled wine warm without it evaporating away.
